Food Lion expands home grocery delivery service

Working in partnership with Instacart, Food Lion has expanded its grocery delivery service in the Charlotte, North Carolina region. Food Lion has been piloting the service in the Charlotte area since May. The expansion – which adds six zip codes – has more than doubled the coverage area.

“Food Lion is extremely pleased with the speedy delivery service Instacart has consistently offered our customers since its launch in May,” said Keith Nicks, vice president of customer engagement at Food Lion. “As we work to expand our home delivery footprint, we’re excited more of our customers will be able to enjoy the convenience of fresh and affordable groceries at their doorstep.”

Food Lion also piloted Instacart in Raleigh, N.C., in June and continues to test the home delivery service in select zip codes in this area.

Customers place their online orders via www.foodlion.com/homedelivery or the Instacart mobile app on their iPhone or Android device, enter their zip code and Food Lion store, then choose a delivery window (within one hour, within two hours, or some scheduled time in the future) and check out. An Instacart Personal Shopper accepts the order on his/her smartphone, uses the Instacart shopper app to guide them through shopping, and then delivers the order to the customer in the designated delivery timeframe.

Food Lion, which is based in Salisbury, has more than 1,100 stores in 10 Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states.

Founded in San Francisco in 2012, Instacart currently operates in 25 metropolitan areas across the US and is working with a wide range of both national chain retailers and local, regional grocers.
