An Post seeks postbox supplier
An Post is inviting expressions of interest from suppliers and manufacturers to provide 500,000 roadside post boxes.
It follows the controversial announcement to erect US-style delivery boxes at the bottom of driveways and lanes, designed to save the postal service up to €35m a year.
The idea is to then begin a tender process for the supply of the boxes.
The main specifications will be durability, quality, security and design.
There are already 80,000 private post boxes in use around the country, a number which will increase six-fold.
Only those who submit a doctor’s certificate to An Post on disability or infirm grounds will be exempt.
Ken Robinson, Managing Director of Letter Post, the division of An Post responsible for delivering mail, says the introduction of roadside boxes is vital to cutting costs.
“We urgently need to address our financial difficulties. The introduction of roadside boxes is an essential part of our corrective action,” he said.
“We are putting in place special provisions to cater for the disabled and the concerns of our elderly citizens living in isolated areas. Customers can be assured that the roadside boxes will be of the highest quality.”
