Amount of correspondence in Latvia grows

The state-owned Latvijas Pasts (Latvian Mail) company last year processed over 58 million letters, up by 5 million or 9 percent from 2001, said the mail service transportation director Agris Timma.

Most of the letters handled by Latvijas Pasts in 2002 were local mail — nearly 50 million letters as opposed to 45 million in 2001.

Last year Latvijas Pasts also handled nearly 4.5 million letters sent to Latvia from foreign countries and 3.6 million letters sent by Latvia’s population to foreign addressees, down a little from 2001 when these figures were 4.6 million and 3.7 million letters.

Timma said most of the correspondence within Latvia was sent by corporate clients and business letters also accounted for growing amount of deliveries made by Latvijas Pasts.

Lattelekom fixed-line telephone company was the leading client, having sent the largest number of letters via Latvijas Pasts last year. Other large clients include the National Social Insurance Agency, LMT mobile telephone operator, etc.

Latvijas Pasts is the only company offering full range of mail services in Latvia. It is also one of the oldest businesses in Latvia and has 26 branches and nearly 1,000 post offices throughout the country.
