Japan's Mitsui teams up with China Postal unit in mail delivery
Japan’s Mitsui & Co. yesterday formed a comprehensive partnership with a distribution subsidiary of China’s postal agency.
Mitsui and the subsidiary will begin providing small-lot delivery services to corporate clients in China as early as within the year.
They aim to secure orders mainly from Japanese manufacturers operating in that country.
Over the next two to three years, the companies will attempt to build a system that will allow them to make deliveries to any location in China within 72 hours.
The postal agency’s subsidiary was founded in January of this year as a specialized service company to handle deliveries of small packages and the like.
Mitsui will help the company with distribution know-how in areas such as package-sorting systems.
To date, Mitsui has provided distribution services in China for import and export goods, offering services chiefly in coastal areas.
It has, however, lagged behind companies including Mitsubishi Corp. and Sumitomo Corp. in starting up delivery services in interior provinces.
