Minister delivers rural funding for N Ireland post offices

ULSTER’S struggling rural post offices were yesterday given a cash boost of pounds 750,000.

NIO Minister Des Browne announced the funding after a News Letter campaign highlighted how postmasters in rural communities were fighting for survival.

Mr Browne said it was important people in the most disadvantaged urban communities continue to have access to the vital services provided by post offices.

“Local post offices are an essential part of local communities,” he said.

“Potentially, up to pounds 750,000 will be needed over the next three years to modernise post offices in urban deprived areas, and to provide additional security measures and improve access for people with disabilities.”

Consumer watchdog, Postwatch Northern Ireland, said the funding was “a much needed boost for post offices in deprived areas”.

“Money is needed to help sustain and develop post offices in these areas where the local community is often heavily dependent on them,” said Postwatch chairman John Stringer.

“I hope additional funds will be made available in years to come.”

Mr Stringer said post offices are much more than simply providers of mail services.

“In many places the post office is also the local shop, community centre, business exchange and bank,” he added.

“They are an important part of day-to-day life of the community, particularly for the elderly and more vulnerable members of society.”
