TNT Express, Sinotrans Dissolve JV in China

TNT Express, the world’s leading business to business express carrier confirmed today that it is committed to its operations in China following the expiry of its joint venture with Sinotrans. Both TNT Express and Sinotrans have decided to pursue their own plans in China and as a result took the decision not to renew their partnership. More than 90% of employees from the TNT-Sinotrans Joint Venture have transferred to the new TNT organisation. ‘As China becomes an economic powerhouse the needs of customers in China are changing,’ said Bryan Chan, Managing Director of TNT Express in China and Hong Kong. ‘TNT Express’ mission is to create value for our customers and we are now in a position to expand our business beyond traditional courier services to meet the changing needs of the Chinese market.’ The company will introduce new value-added express solutions in China to further its expansion plan over the next three years. By the end of 2003, the number of TNT Express branches will rise from 12 to 25 and the number of international gateways from three to seven cities. Last week the company launched services for heavier weight shipments of above 30kg as well as launching a national toll-free Customer Service Hotline so that customers can contact TNT Express more easily. ‘China is a strategic market for TNT Express and we are expanding in accordance with WTO guidelines in China,’ said Mr Chan. ‘As the world’s leading global B2B express company, we will continue to expand the boundaries of business for customers in China by enhancing their access to global markets. Besides opening up more branches, we will also be introducing the entire range of express delivery services that include value-adding solutions for vertical markets such as electronics, hi-tech manufacturers, automotive, telecommunications and pharmaceuticals.
