MP on track with bid to save UK Royal Mail trains

Edinburgh MP Mark Lazarowicz has joined the campaign to save Royal Mail rail services.

Royal Mail has recently announced it intends to withdraw its entire rail network of services for mail distribution by March 2004 in favour of using planes and lorries.

Mr Lazarowicz is one of more than 40 MPs who are supporting a parliamentary motion calling for Royal Mail’s decision to be reversed.

The Edinburgh North and Leith Labour MP said: “This is a bad decision by Royal Mail. The proposed move away from rail would increase road congestion and contribute to environmental pollution because of the higher pollution from the road and air alternatives to rail.

“In addition, it threatens the quality of mail deliveries throughout the UK.

“The rail mail service has a very high level of reliability, and I believe the decision by Royal Mail is a false economy.

“What will these changes mean during winter weather, when road and air travel can often be disrupted when trains can still get through?
