Deutsche Post and Deutsche Bahn expand co-operation
Parcel InterCity network to be extended by east/west route / In future parcels will also travel environmentally friendly at 160 km/h via Germany’s railway network
In future more parcel and express items will be sent by rail. Both companies are expecting to reactivate the route from Cologne, Germay, to Berlin at the beginning of the coming year. Other routes are being planned. The toll for lorries due to come into effect on 1 September and the increasing number of items are the basis for this co-operation decision. In doing so the Parcel InterCity network, currently covering the routes Hamburg/Hanover to Munich/Nuremberg, will be considerably extended. The destinations will be connected during the night with each other by trains, which, at up to 160 km/h, travel faster than any lorry.
High reliability and exactly timed loading and unloading are further advantages of the Parcel InterCity so that both companies are confident of further development of this unique system. Dr Peter E. Kruse, Board Member Express Europa at Deutsche Post World Net commented by saying, ‘The Parcel InterCity is for us a logistics solution of the future. Especially now, with the toll for lorries making road transport more expensive, it will also be a real alternative with regard to price. We also offer other haulage companies the possibility of booking appropriate space on these trains with us.’
The head of DB Cargo, Dr Bernd Malmström, showed his appreciation by saying, ‘We thank Deutsche Post for their trust and are confident of further advancing the Parcel InterCity network together.’
A 182 series locomotive in DHL/Deutsche Post colours will in future also portray the co-operation idea externally.
