Deutsche Post announces higher parcel forwarding charge

Deutsche Post, the German national postal service operator, is reported to have announced plans to increase charges for parcel deliveries for business customers, with effect from September 1. The price increase comes in reaction to road tolls for HGVs.

There is reported to be some uncertainty regarding the exact date on which the new toll is to be introduced. While the German government had envisaged August 31 as a launch date, the EU Commission has expressed reservations regarding the toll plan.

DHL raise prices due to new government charge

DHL is raising the price of some products, as it passes on a government charge to be levied on trucks starting Sept. 1. (7/25/2003)

DHL says a fee of EUR0.08 will be added to all packages. It will be included as a separate item on bills.

The German government argues truck transport operators should pay for the impact the vehicles have on roads. A truck with an axle weight of 40 tons causes 60,000 times more damage than a normal car, according to a government Web site. The government hopes the move will result in freight being transported by cargo ship or by rail, rather than by road.
