Self-driving truck completes US coast-to-coast journey

A self-driving truck has completed a 2,400-mile coast-to-coast trip from Los Angeles, California, to Jacksonville, Florida.

The vehicle was developed by Embark – the company which launched its autonomous trucking technology last year and previously ran a successful trial on a route between LA and El Paso, Texas.

Although the truck is described as self-driving, a human driver was in the cab during the coast-to-coast journey to monitor the truck’s progress.

“The driver is always responsible for being attentive and making sure that everything is safe, but the driver will regularly go many hours down the road without actually being involved, and when they are involved, it’s usually just for a few seconds,” said Embark CEO Alex Rodrigues.
