TNT Express improves Belgian deliveries with Psion Teklogix

TNT Express Airside Operations in Belgium reduces parcel loading time by 10% and packages now arrive 6 minutes faster then before

Psion Teklogix, (LSE: PON), a global provider of solutions for mobile computing and wireless data collection, today announced that TNT Express – the world’s leading business to business express carrier has implemented Psion Teklogix’ Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) communication solution and has armed its ground workers with rugged netpad® handheld devices for its airside operation at the company’s European Air Express hub in Liege, Belgium.

TNT Express serves 65 air gateways in Europe, with 70 per cent of its international air express consignments passing through the Liege facility. The new wireless system, called ‘Mobiler’, will allow the company to significantly reduce the amount of time it takes to load and off-load consignments onto its aircraft, as well as increase overall productivity. To date TNT Express has seen a 10% reduction in the amount of time it takes to load consignments onto aircrafts with the new wireless system. As a result TNT aircraft carrying 430,000 consignments per week to 65 airports in 28 European countries now arrive up to 6 minutes earlier than before – improving on-time delivery performance – one of the company’s most important customer satisfaction criteria.

“TNT Express is dedicated to providing customers with the fastest and most reliable express delivery services,” said Christian Drenthen, Managing Director, TNT Express Networks. “Mobiler will allow us to reduce the time it takes to load aircrafts and improve the service we provide our customers. We expect that this new solution will not only help to streamline services for us and our customers but will establish an industry benchmark in the use of wireless technologies.”

The new Psion Teklogix WLAN solution allows TNT personnel in the control tower to communicate with loading teams on the ground via the netpad. Vehicles used by the loading teams are equipped with netpads and printers which provide workers with real-time instructions regarding flight arrivals, departures and container location on the aircraft. Before the implementation of Mobiler, control tower personnel communicated with ground staff via a traditional radio system and staff then had to retrieve loading instructions from a printer in TNT’s sorting building.

“Speed, reliability and communication are essential components of the TNT business and we are pleased to offer a wireless solution that meets the needs of their customers,” said Dirk Briat, General Manager, Psion Teklogix, Benelux. “The new wireless system arms ground workers with the information they need to get the job done faster than ever before. “

TNT worked closely with Liege airport to implement the correct infrastructure to support the WLAN solution and the airport made a significant investment in antennae and other essential equipment. The new technology combines software written in-house by TNT with hardware provided by Psion Teklogix.
