London UK Post workers accept deal to end pay row

Postal workers have voted to accept a deal aimed at ending a long running dispute over pay, it was announced.

Members of the Communication Workers Union voted by more than 2-1 in favour of a deal covering pay, London Weighting allowances and working practices.

Deputy general secretary Dave Ward said there had been a “moderate” turnout in the ballot which was a “health warning” to the Royal Mail.

“The success or failure of this agreement hangs on how it is implemented at local level. The deal promises input from the union locally in setting targets which are realistic and achievable.

“The ballot result demonstrates that we want to get on with the job but the turnout suggests that some of our members are reserving their judgment, which is understandable.”

The dispute flared last year when postal workers staged unofficial action which crippled mail deliveries in London.
