First electric delivery vehicles launched in New Zealand

DHL Express has  launched three electric vehicles to be deployed in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington, in line with Deutsche Post DHL Group’s aim to reduce all logistics-related emissions to net zero by 2050.

The vehicles will be used for pick-up and delivery services and are expected to reduce CO2 emissions by about 80%.

Mark Foy, Country Manager, DHL Express New Zealand says: “The decisions we make today will have an impact on the future generation and therefore it is critical for us to make the right decisions today. We are very excited to deploy new electric vehicles, which is a significant step towards our goal of becoming a zero-emissions logistics provider by 2050. We are committed to delivering excellent service to our customers and working with them to achieve sustainable growth.”

This year, over 170 DHL Express New Zealand customers have signed up for DHL’s GoGreen Carbon Neutral service, which allows them to opt for an environmentally responsible shipping option and helps to combat climate change by offsetting emissions throughout the transportation of shipments. With each shipment, DHL makes a corresponding contribution to a climate protection project through the purchase of carbon credits from verified and high-quality projects.

In line with the Group’s goal to achieve zero-emissions, globally DHL Express aims to operate 70% of its first and last mile services with clean pick-up and delivery solutions by 2025 – it will continue to expand the use of e-mobility and green delivery solutions in its operations, and support development of environmentally friendly technologies.

The three electric vehicles have been partly funded by the Government’s Low Emission Vehicles Contestable Fund, which supports innovative projects that expand the use and possibilities of electric vehicles and other low emissions technology in the transport space.
