DHL Opens New Cargo Hub At Jkia, Kenya

DHL Express has opened a new air express facility at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

The facility, Kenya’s largest-ever, is aimed at bolstering DHL Kenya’s position as a transport hub for the East and Central Africa region.

The 2200 sq metre facility will operate 24 hours to consolidate inbound and outbound express shipments, and trans-shipment to the DHL Global network, including East and Central Africa, South Africa and the Middle East Region.

The new facility is located in what was previously Kenya Airfreight Handling Limited’s Perishable Cargo Area. This follows an agreement negotiated directly with the Kenya Airport Authority (KAA) and supports both DHL’s and KAA’s strategic visions to make JKIA the premier cargo hub in East and Central Africa.

“The opening of DHL’s new hub is an important milestone for company. As the largest hub of its kind in Kenya, with Customs and Excise personnel on site to manage import/export processing, it will greatly enhance the company’s position as a distribution and transport hub for this region,” said Howard Goldfield, DHL Commercial Manager for Equatorial Africa.

He said the facility will also strengthen DHL’s leading position as an integrated express and logistics provider for Kenya and the world.”

“This is a significant financial commitment for DHL which is being driven by continued projection in growth for Kenya’s international express shipments of time-sensitive goods – ranging from samples and spare parts to semi-finished and finished goods. It is our goal, and more specifically our job to make this investment work for our customers so that their express import and export consignments are handled efficiently.”

Kenyan exporters and importers are increasingly leveraging express distribution as a source of competitive advantage in an increasingly competitive marketplace. “DHL offers comprehensive products and services as well as a facility that offers the values of speed, reliability, innovation and internationalism to meet customers’ needs,” Mr Goldfield said.
