UK MPs attack Royal Mail Group‘s size-based pricing
A group of MPs is demanding that Royal Mail rethink its size-based pricing proposals by excluding mail order photograph developers from the charges, amid fears of a raft of job losses.
Twenty-five MPs, including high-profile members Jeremy Corbyn and Kevin McNamara, have signed an Early Day Motion designed to raise awareness of the issue. It states: “The photo-finishing industry would be put out of business as a result of this change… [we call] upon Her Majesty’s Government to press Royal Mail to make an exception for this industry in order to save jobs and ensure the continuation of a valuable service to customers.”
The proposals drew heavy criticism from industry bodies when they were unveiled (PM April 5, 2002). Agency and client groups claimed they would stifle creativity and damage the medium.
Changes to the original proposals have since been made, with Royal Mail taking some of the industry’s concerns on board. However, many observers still fear the changes will hit the sector hard.
