Japan Post, Sankyu to begin international distribution operations

Japan Post will team up with Sankyu Inc. to enter the international market by first setting up a network to deliver imported goods from China and Southeast Asia, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported Thursday.

The business daily said Sankyu will handle imported items from Asia while Japan Post will oversee deliveries to households and companies via its post office network.

Japan Post and Sankyu, a transport company affiliated with Nippon Steel Corp., hope to eventually expand their alliance to export-oriented operations to compete with such major players as DHL International Ltd. and FedEx Corp.

Speaking at a lecture for Kyodo News subscribers in Tokyo on July 14, Japan Post President Masaharu Ikuta said that he plans to strengthen international competitiveness of the public corporation’s postal service so that it can expand its mail delivery service to other Asian countries.

Japan Post said in June that it has reached a basic accord with Chinese postal authorities on a business tie-up, setting the goal of doubling mail and parcel deliveries between the two countries in three years.
