Deutsche Post to shut down several hundred of its smallest outlets in Germany

Deutsche Post AG said it plans to close several hundred of its smallest outlets throughout Germany as part of a cost-cutting program the company initiated in 2002.

Service from the closed outlets will be moved to franchises in supermarkets, news stands and other stores, the company said.

Closing these businesses will not lead to any job losses, spokesman Juergen Blohm said.

Other steps toward the goal of cutting 1.4 bln eur in costs by the end of 2005 include the consolidation of currently 18 computer data centres into three or four locations, creating a global purchasing department and cutting out night flights.
