UAE bids to host UPU meeting

The UAE bid to host the next Universal Postal Union (UPU) yesterday during the 23rd UPU meeting held in Bucharest, Romania. The only other country that contested to play host was Kenya.

The official announcement on the next host country will be made on October 1.

Emirates Post has also offered candidacy for the elections to the Council of Administrators and the Postal Operations Council of the UPU.

The Emirates Post Corporation team led by Mattar Humaid Al Tayer, UAE Minister of Labour and Social Affairs and Acting Minister of Communications, are attending the congress. Also attending is Abdullah Al Daboos, Director General of Emirates Post.

Addressing the Congress yesterday, Al Tayer said the postal strategies finalised during the congress will give direction to organisation in the next four years.

“It is important that decisions are taken after ensuring that all countries benefit from the new policies. The UPU has been doing a commendable job over the past few years and we expect this congress will turn out to be an important event that will help different postal organisations devise new strategies for higher efficiency, better service and greater profits.

“The UAE is a country that has made rapid development in all fields, especially communications and posts. The UAE ranks among the most developed nations in the region, because of the dynamic leadership and a vision to achieve new milestones. ”

He pointed out that the UAE is the Middle East’s premier destination for global conferences and conventions.

“The prime example of this was UAE’s success in organising the Annual Meetings of International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in September 2003. This was the first time that this important event was held in an Arab country.

“I am proud to announce that the UAE is making a strong bid to host the next UPU Congress in Dubai 2008,” he said.

Al Tayer added that Empost is also taking part in the elections to the Council of Administration and the Postal Operations Council.

Dynamic corporation

“Emirates Post is a dynamic and innovative postal corporation with a number of achievements to its credit. Its semi-government structure gives it the drive and strategic direction needed to go ahead with major projects and initiatives.

The Emirates Post team, which is present here to study the organisational set-up needed for hosting the congress, is strongly committed to bring the next congress to Dubai and make it an outstanding success. We look forward to welcome the congress in four years from now,” he said.

Addressing reporters, he said that UAE is quite confident that it would win. “U. S, Europe and East Asian countries are supporting us. ”

Thomas E. Leavey, outgoing UPU director general, when asked which country would win, said: “If you ask my opinion both Kenya and UAE are good. “
