TNT Express Netherlands awarded ISO14001 accreditation
TNT Express – the world’s leading business to business express delivery company – today announced that its Netherlands operations has been awarded the ISO14001 accreditation for its efforts to reduce environmental damage, by minimising harmful CO2 emissions and moderating fuel consumption and wastage.
The standard – which has been obtained by a number of TNT locations – was achieved by implementing a management system which focuses on the environmental aspects of the company’s operations. The upgrading of TNT’s Euro III compliant vehicles to a fleet that meets the more stringent Euro IV emission regulations was a key part of the programme. This will be further refined during 2006 when TNT introduces vehicles that comply with the Euro V emission standards, as part of the existing stock is due for replacement.
“The Netherlands is the company’s latest location to receive the ISO14001 accreditation for its commitment to reducing the harmful affects of business on the environment. This has partly been achieved by purchasing vehicles that cause less pollution and increasing the awareness of all our employees, through training, in how to minimise activities that damage the environment”, said Hari Thind, Director CSR & Quality, TNT Express.
As part of the company’s ongoing drive to improve environmental performance in the Netherlands, TNT drivers also participate in a ‘Professionals on the Road to Excellent Service’ course, where they are trained to drive more carefully and with greater efficiency, to reduce fuel usage. In addition, employees will be trained to assist customers that ship dangerous goods, preparing them for emergencies in the warehouse or on the road.
Further initiatives include a scheme, partly subsidised by the Dutch Government, in which TNT will fit particulate filters to the engines of its delivery trucks in the Netherlands. When applied to the fleet’s diesel engines, the filters prevent many harmful pollutants from reaching the atmosphere.
“TNT is pleased to be able to assist the Dutch Government in its trial of particulate filters, while reaping the environmental benefits of the technology,” continued Thind.
The Netherlands is one of several TNT locations to receive ISO14001 accreditation in 2005; others include Italy, TNT ICS, Austria, Israel, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The Belux (Belgium & Luxembourg) region of TNT is due to receive accreditation in December 2006.
