Hermes Germany: keeping our promise to promote sustainable city logistics nationwide

Hermes Germany  has announced that from now on it will deliver 3,000 emission free shipments everyday in Dresden city centre.

The approximately one million shipments per year are delivered with a total of 21 e-transporters, and the use of cargo bikes is also planned from summer. This means that more than 300,000 people in Dresden will receive their shipments with zero emissions.

“Emission-free delivery in downtown Dresden is a real milestone for us,” explains Sebastian Schulze-Kirchner, Area Manager at Hermes Germany. “We now deliver the shipments without CO 2 emissions in more than 17 postal code areas. With this step, we not only make the city of Dresden even more livable, but also keep our promise to continue to promote sustainable city logistics nationwide.”

The starting point for sustainable delivery is a centrally located distribution centre with the necessary charging infrastructure. “E-vans are just one side of the coin,” adds Sebastian Schulze-Kirchner. “The right charging infrastructure at the location must also be in place to make such a project possible.” The 21 vans are charged overnight and move more than 3,000 shipments during the day without generating any carbon emissions.

The parcels and parcels are not only delivered to the front door without CO 2 pollution, some of the ParcelShop tours are also carried out with the e-vans.

The e-vans cover more than 1,200 kilometers a day in downtown Dresden. This saves around 129 tons of CO 2 annually.

In the near future, further areas around the city centre are to be developed: the charging infrastructure at the Dresden location is currently being further expanded. Because from July 2022, five more e-transporters are to be on the road in Dresden in order to further increase the number of emission-free shipments.

In addition, cargo bikes will also be used from the summer: “Together with the city of Dresden and other market participants, we will implement a microhub location in Dresden Neustadt,” says Sebastian Schulze-Kirchner, looking to the future. “From there, cargo bikes will then be delivered in the city centre without emissions. The cargo bikes are a perfect addition to our mobility concept in Dresden.”
