New scanners for GLS Polish couriers and branches

GLS Poland has invested €2 million on some 800 new scanners for its couriers and branch offices in Eastern Europe’s largest express parcels market. Customers benefit from improved tracking options.

The hand-held data scanners, developed in cooperation with IBM and Symbol Technologies, enable GLS drivers to transmit shipment receipt data to the central system using Wireless LAN technology. The new scanners feature multi-coloured displays and high resolution cameras to record electronic signatures and also any damage to the shipment.

“Faster data transfer is not only important from the viewpoint of operating processes,” explained Zbigniew Ptaszynski, District Manager GLS Poland. “It is also convenient for our customers who can get information about their shipments more quickly.”

The new equipment has been smoothly and successfully introduced into GLS Poland’s everyday business since May. For the future, GLS is planning to make the data available in real-time on its system shortly after the scanning by using GPRS technology.
