AliExpress to offer services to South Koreans

Alibaba Group Holding’s international e-commerce platform AliExpress and its courier unit Cainiao Smart Logistics Network have launched a seven-day express delivery service for oversize parcels in South Korea.

Consumers in South Korea can receive their furniture, home appliances, and other large-sized parcels within seven days, AliExpress announced today.

At the end of last September, the two Alibaba businesses launched a five-day global delivery service in five overseas markets, including South Korea.

AliExpress exceeded 6.1 million users in South Korea, beating well-established South Korean online shopping website GMarket to become the third-largest e-commerce platform in the country, marking the first time an overseas platform makes the top three in the South Korean e-commerce industry, according to data released by South Korean software analysis service provider Wiseapp Retail Goods last October.

In the first three quarters of last year, cross-border e-commerce orders in South Korea jumped 20 percent to KRW4.79 trillion (USD3.6 billion) from a year earlier, the South Korean Customs Service said last October. Orders for Chinese goods exceeded KRW2 trillion, accounting for nearly half of the total.

Large AliExpress advertising billboards can now be seen in South Korean metros, Huang Fei, director of the Seoul School of Integrated Sciences and Technologies, recently told Yicai.

“For the South Koreans who are already used to online shopping, AliExpress is considered a good option, as there are many cost-effective Chinese products available on the platform,” Huang noted.
