DHL Group’s approach to reducing emissions: A clearer path forward

DHL Group welcomes the recent clarification of the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) regarding emission reduction strategies.

“We believe that offsetting measures are a less promising way to reduceCO2e and therefore do not play a role in calculating the company’s climate targets, carbon footprint and actions. DHL Group welcomes the fact that the statement focuses on environmental certificates to reduce Scope 3 emissions, which the company interprets as a positive sign of acceptance of the “Book & Claim approach”.

As one of the world’s largest logistics service providers, we are committed to “Book & Claim”. With this more transparent and accountable approach, we can help our customers track their emissions reductions and ensure they are validated by a third party. This promotes transparency and accountability throughout the process. The approach is part of the DHL GoGreen Plus service portfolio.

Yin Zou, Head of Corporate Strategy and Corporate Development at DHL Group, emphasises: “‘Book & Claim’ not only allows us to accurately measure and validate emission reductions, but also promotes investments in renewable energy and sustainable practices. This approach aligns with our ongoing commitment to driving positive change in our industry while achieving our business goals.”

“Book & Claim” plays a crucial role in relation to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). It facilitates the development and adoption of SAF. This is in line with our commitment to reducing emissions from aviation, as SAF is currently the only viable alternative to traditional fossil fuels. With Book & Claim, we aim to increase the availability and use of SAF in our operations and ultimately contribute to our goal of using more than 30 percent sustainable fuels by 2030.
