The goal of the agreement is to improve energy efficiency in the sector by 9% by 2016.
Itella Corporation has signed the energy efficiency agreement for the goods transportation and logistics sector for 2008–2016.
In accordance with the agreement, Itella undertakes to improve energy efficiency on a continuous basis as concerns both transportation and the related premises. Energy efficiency will be taken into account in planning and acquisitions. In addition, energy efficient technologies and practices that enhance energy efficiency will be introduced.
With the agreement, Itella also requires that its transportation subcontractors join the energy efficiency agreement and report their energy consumption. Itella encourages its transportation subcontractors to adopt quality and environmental systems. Itella already evaluates emission rates of vehicles when selecting partners.
The energy efficiency agreement for goods transportation and logistics is an answer to international commitments in the fight against climate change. The agreement is voluntary for enterprises and is based on the saving targets set by the EU for the sectors not belonging to the EU emissions trading scheme.
