DHL Global Forwarding is looking at outsourcing some of its back-office work to India and is running a pilot project for this.

It will move segments of operations to the country and utilise the trained manpower and infrastructure developed here. Amadou Diallo, CEO, DHL Global Forwarding South Asia-Pacific, said, “We are planning some offshore activities such as outsourcing of internal back-office work from our global forwarding network to India.”

DHL plans to utilise its strength of well-trained people and established systems, including information technology, in India. “Besides, with 2.5m college passouts every year, India provides enough people to service DHL’s global needs,” Diallo said.

DHL had recently set up a centre of excellence for back-office work and recruited 60 people. The firm intends to set up more such units and hire more people. However, the company declined to give details as the project is still in the pilot stage. Setting up a desk for back-office work requires investment. Diallo said further plans are being discussed.

The global forwarder is also looking at other growing countries such as the Philippines for outsourcing. DHL says it needs more Indian employees abroad to service clients. It has already sent people to the USA and European countries to provide support to Indian exporters there. DHL’s expansion plans in India are intact as it posted a growth of 20% in the country last year.
