High-level stakeholders from the postal sector will meet at the Universal Postal Union (UPU) to discuss the global economic crisis.

The conference will take place in Berne, Switzerland, on 2 April, and will explore not only the crisis’ negative impact but also new business opportunities.

The postal sector has not been left untouched by the financial crisis currently raging through the world’s economy. As in other sectors, postal operators have also experienced a downturn in performance, with mail volumes and revenues particularly affected. However, the picture is not altogether bleak. Some operators have reported positive developments since the crisis started. Those offering postal savings accounts have even reported a surge in new business, no doubt linked to the lack of confidence in other financial institutions, such as the banks.

Meeting participants will include CEOs from international postal operators from the United States, Italy, Greece, France, Hong Kong, Russia, Morocco, and private operator TNT Post. Also adding their voices to the discussions will be the International Monetary Fund, Ebay International and the International Telecommunication Union.
