UPS took more than half of DHL’s US domestic package business during the first quarter.

“We captured a little more than half of DHL’s US business, with the rest split up between our competitors,” chief financial officer Kurt Kuehn said in a conference call with analysts on 23 April.

DHL shut down its US domestic service at the end of January with the loss of 9,500 jobs. The company blamed the decision on the US recession and the task of trying to take on UPS and FedEx on their home turf.
