DHL has opened its first Malaysian regional packaging centre in Selangor, targeting to capture a slice of the $12.5bn packaging market in Asia-Pacific, the Business Times reported.

The 65,000 square foot facility is the first-of-its-kind to be established by DHL in the region and the company plans to set up six more of such centres by 2012, namely in China, Thailand, Indonesia and India.

DHL supply chain chief executive officer for Asia-Pacific, Paul Graham, said the packaging business in Asia-Pacific is expected to grow by 15% year-on-year over the next three years.

Graham said DHL’s investment in the centre is timely as packaging services currently form 25% of the contract logistics market in Asia-Pacific.

Malaysia’s packaging business alone accounts for 5% of the estimated value of the packaging market in Asia-Pacific.
