Royal Mail goes rock ‘n’ roll for 2010

Classic Album Covers, issued on 7 January, features some of the greatest examples of British album cover design, brought to life on ten 1st class stamps, each with a vinyl disc ’emerging’ from the edge of the stamp.

Legendary designs are on show, among them the bent chromed pipe of Mike Oldfield’s seminal 70s masterpiece, Tubular Bells; the astonishing statues of Pink Floyd’s The Division Bell, and the racing greyhounds of Blur’s Brit Pop classic, Parklife.

In February we say “happy 100th birthday” to the largest youth organisation in the UK, with our colourful and vibrant Girlguiding UK stamps, and the same month also sees another significant anniversary, this time 350 years, marking the foundation of The Royal Society, the world’s oldest scientific academy in continuous existence.

We move from science to animal magic in March, when we celebrate the 150th anniversary of another world famous organisation, The Battersea Dogs and Cats Home. And who better to demonstrate the important work of the charity, than ten former residents – now successfully re-homed – who posed for a series of wonderful canine and feline portraits.

Other stamp issues to look forward to in 2010 include: Mammals, the latest in Royal Mail’s extraordinary Action for Species series; Britain Alone, which features poignant black and white images of the Home Front during the dark days of 1940; Children’s Books, Stage Musicals, and Great British Railways.

Julietta Edgar, head of special stamps, Royal Mail, said: “Royal Mail’s Special Stamps are famous around the world for their ability to capture the richness and diversity of British heritage and culture.

“As different as they are distinctive, Special Stamps bring together famous people, great art, historic events and major anniversaries on millions of miniature canvasses every month.”
