GLS Denmark adds to parcel shop network through Bilka partnership

GLS Denmark has reached an agreement with supermarket group Dansk Supermarked to open service locations at 16 of its Bilka retail stores. As from yesterday (July 4), customers visiting the superstores will be able to pick-up or send parcels at the GLS package stations.

GLS – the second largest parcel operator in Denmark – said it was “proud” to enter a partnership with Dansk Supermarked, whose Bilka stores attract six million visitors per year.

GLS Denmark’s general manager Karsten Klitmøller said the move will be advantageous to modern-day consumers who lack free time. By having GLS locations at Bilka stores, Klitmøller added shoppers will be able to benefit from being able to collect their parcels and packets whilst doing their shopping, during long opening hours.

He added: “We are proud that Dansk Supermarked has chosen us as partners.”

Since 2005, GLS has been expanding its network of parcel shops. There are now 575 service points across various retail locations.

“Parcel shops are actually even more important as a pickup than as a transit place,” said Klitmøller.

Over recent years, GLS has been pioneering customised e-commerce solutions. Since 2007, online shoppers have had the option to have their goods delivered to a specific parcel shop rather than at home – thus helping to drive down expensive home delivery failure costs.

More than 400 Danish online retailers are already working with GLS Denmark to offer their customers this option. So far, the initiative has proved to be a great success, with parcel shop custom jumping by 240% between April 2010 and March 2011.
