Purolator seeks patent for package handling software
Canadian parcel carrier Purolator has filed a patent application on software it has developed to efficiently manage capacity and revenue levels within its processing network. The company’s Arc Flow Management system is currently in use within its Moncton, Edmonton, Calgary and Prince George sorting facilities.
An additional 20 Purolator facilities are expected to install the system over the coming year.

Continual improvement
Toronto-based Purolator, which is majority-owned by Canada Post, handles about 275m packages and documents each year, with 143 processing sites.
The company said the Arc Flow Management system was part of its continual effort to improve its service offering.
Purolator has been using a laser scanning and weighing system called ARC – Automated Reweigh and Cube – for more than 10 years to speed up materials handling at its facilities.
“The Arc Flow Management system, already in place in many Purolator facilities, allows for continuous productivity improvements both from a human and financial perspective,” explained Kirk Serjeantson, Director of Operations Technology Development at Purolator.
“This patent pending application will benefit the smooth-running of our operations, and also encourage further innovation in the logistics sector,” added Serjeantson.
