FedEx to launch international service from Northern Ireland

FedEx Express is set to open a new facility in Belfast next month, as it launches its own international service for Northern Ireland. The company has previously been providing services there through a partner, but confirmed to Post&Parcel today that it its new facility in Carrickfergus will “assist local firms in accessing international markets”.

Although FedEx is releasing few details about its new offering until next month’s launch, a company spokesman confirmed: “The new service is expected to improve the competitiveness of local exporting companies by reducing delivery times and offering a Next Day timed delivery to East Coast US cities.”

An official launch is being planned for November 8, to be held at Belfast International Airport.

FedEx has leased a facility in the Kilroot Business Park, a site that is already home to IFS Global Logistics, about 12 miles north of Belfast city centre on the M5 motorway, with easy reach to ports at Larne and Belfast.

Commercial property firm Highcross said FedEx has taken a 10-year lease on a 20,000 square foot (2,200 square metre) facility with an adjoining 2,500 square foot office building, built to FedEx’s specification.

The company said the facility was set to be the Northern Ireland Flagship Depot for international consignments for Fedex.

Joint agent CB Richard Ellis also confirmed the lease, as one of its most significant in the Belfast market in recent weeks.
