Exapaq upgrades parcel scanning with Honeywell technology

French parcel delivery company Exapaq has upgraded its mobile computer systems for 2,100 drivers in its workforce with technology from Honeywell. Exapaq, part of La Poste’s pan-European DPD Group since its acquisition in 2006, will be using Honeywell’s Dolphin 99EX mobile computer system to improve productivity and minimise downtime while drivers are out on the road.

The system helps mobile workers process, track and deliver more parcels in less time according to its manufacturer, and Exapaq said the technology had stood up well in its testing.

Patrick Cavoue, the information systems manager at Exapaq, said the technology would help his company distance itself from competitors in providing the “best parcel delivery experience possible”.

He said: “Honeywell’s Dolphin 99EX brings together ergonomics, durability and according to our testing, the best bar code rading and imaging available in the marketplace.”

The new Dolphin 99EX system boasts 3.9G wireless technology keeping workers connected regardless of network carrier, while allowing a more rapid transfer of data and better tracking while on the road.

Honeywell said the terminal uses “next-generation” Adaptus Imaging Technology 6.0 to scan linear and 2D bar codes as well as capturing pictures in various lighting conditions.

With 16 hours of use on a single battery charge, the terminal will cut the need for carrying extra batteries or for fitting chargers in delivery vehicles, said the manufacturer, adding that the system’s durability will mean lower operating costs in the long run.

Eric De Greef, product marketing manager for mobility at Honeywell, said customers would have a “very reliable and productive future ahead of them” when using the Dolphin 99EX system.

“Exapaq’s selection of the 99EX is a testament to their confidence in Honeywell’s ability to provide their drivers with the technology needed to deliver parcels as efficiently as possible,” he said.

Remote MasterMind

Meanwhile, today saw Honeywell launching a new integrated mobility and scanning device management software system.

The US conglomerate said its Remote MasterMind 3.0 system would allow integration of various devices under a single web-based console, including Honeywell bar code scanners, Microsoft Windows-based mobility devices, consumer smartphones and both Android and iPad tablets.

Customers will be able to monitor operational issues like battery life and performance for all their mobile devices, allowing IT technicians to quickly work out usage patterns and apply training to improve efficiency, Honeywell said.

“ReM 3.0 delivers the unique ability to remotely manage most enterprise mobile devices,” said Darius Adamczyk, the Honeywell Scanning & Mobility president. “It’s an industry first that solidifies our commitment to ongoing automatic identification and data capture innovations, and will transform device management for our customers.”

The new system will begin shipping in the second quarter of 2012.
