Australia Post opens first “superstore” in Western Australia

Australia Post is continuing the expansion of its retail “superstores” with the opening of the first such branch in Western Australia this week. After major revamp with a particular eye to serving the boom in internet shopping, the new superstore in Perth includes seven counters tailored to different customer requirements and a set of self-service terminals and parcel lockers to allow activities like bill payment, mail posting and parcel collection around the clock.

It also includes a online shopping tools in a special zone that allows shopping via Apple Macs and iPads, and a dedicated area for travel services that offers passport, currency and travel insurance.

Australia Post said the superstore particularly pushes a personalised and self-service approach to postal retail.

Paul Lecher, the Australia Post regional manager for retail services in Western Australia, said: “Our new superstores are in direct response to the 10m Australians now shopping online and their desire for greater convenience with it comes to posting and picking up their mail.”

Australia Post opened its first superstore in Brisbane in November, with plans to open 30 superstores around the country by August.

Vehicle services

As part of the new Perth superstore’s range of services, the superstore at 66 St Georges Terrace will be the first to allow customers to obtain and renew their driver’s licences.

Australia Post has agreed a partnership with the Western Australia Department of Transport to expand its service portfolio into the in-store provision of drivers’ licences.

Michael D’Souza said general manager of driver and vehicle services at the Department, said metropolitan driver and vehicle services had been recently introduced with Australia Post in Freemantle and had seen a positive response, with customers seeing their post office as a convenient location for key services.

He said of the new Perth superstore: “Customers can access all driver and vehicle services except for practical driving assessments and vehicle examinations in-store. We’re delighted to have another key point of presence for our customers.”
