DHL Supply Chain opens MegaHub in Hong Kong

DHL Supply Chain has opened its new state-of-the-art “MegaHub” facility in Hong Kong, which will serve as the company’s new Hong Kong headquarters. The facility in Tsing Yi brings together the company’s Hong Kong operations and expands its infrastructure in nearly 900,000 square feet of warehouse space.

The new MegaHub is located close to Hong Kong international airport, the city’s business district and container terminals, and major highways connecting to mainland China.

Deutsche Post DHL has invested EUR 63m in the project, leasing part of the new Goodman Interlink warehouse site, which opened in March as Hong Kong’s fourth largest warehouse and the biggest new warehouse project in Hong Kong in nearly a decade.

Other companies leasing space at the 24-storey Interlink building include Nippon Express, Yusen Logistics and BEL International Logistics.

The project forms part of Deutsche Post DHL’s EUR 224m investment programme for its North Asian sub-region over the past three years, and the company is continuing its investment in this area with a further EUR 300m slated to be spent up to 2015.

Frank Appel, the Deutsche Post DHL chief executive, said the new facility will meet the needs of one of the most active regions in the world economy.

“Both international and local customers require effective and efficient solutions to establish their supply chains in the region, and we are proud to open DHL Supply Chain MegaHub Hong Kong to better serve the market,” said Appel.

Capabilities

The new facility features capabilities to suit a range of customers, with ramp-access floors for large inbound and outbound volumes, along with cargo lift floors and additional features like temperature-control areas and secured cages.

The building also has a two-tier security system and “extensive” safety features, DHL said.

Tom Wong, the managing director for DHL Supply Chain in Hong Kong and Macau, said the scale of the facility ensured there would be cost efficiencies and operational benefits for clients as their businesses in the region develop.

“Establishing our new headquarters within this expansive and cutting-edge property will enable us to provide timely service, monitoring and support to our customers,” he said.

Sustainability

The Interlink building is the only warehouse development in Hong Kong to be awarded the Gold Standard under the international Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) programme, which DHL said fit with its GoGreen global sustainability initiative.

The facility is designed to minimise waste and reduce carbon emissions from conventional operation, without compromising service.

Deutsche Post DHL’s GoGreen initiative aims to help the company cut its global emissions by 30% by 2020, compared to a 2007 baseline.

Paul Graham, the DHL Supply Chain CEO for the Asia Pacific region, said the environmental foundation for the new facility was part of his company’s innovation in its logistics solutions.

“DHL Supply Chain MegaHub Hong Kong strengthens our ability to provide a green and socially-responsible offer, helping support our customers’ future business growth,” he said.
