Mail rate plan condemend by post watchdog

Postwatch has attacked Royal Mail over its controversial plan for a new pricing system, branding it both complicated and unnecessary.

The post industry watchdog voiced its disapproval of the new system, which will take into account the size of an item as well as its weight, following consultation with a range of postal users.

Peter Carr, chairman of Postwatch, says: “This is the wrong route. Royal Mail should be buying machinery that processes the larger items that customers wish to send.

“It is trying to solve an internal investment problem by asking customers to change to a new, complicated method, in order to post the same items they send now.

“Our consultation with all users shows they want to send letters and packages of all shapes and sizes, and should not be penalised.”

Since news of Royal Mail’s plans leaked in April, the system has been subject to criticism from industry figures, with concerns voiced about its potential effect on creativity within direct mail.
