UK Bank Holiday Monday rail strike has been called off

Rail unions have called off the 24-hour strike that had threatened to cripple passenger and freight train services from 5pm on Monday (25 May). The Rail, Maritime and Transport union and Transport Salaried Staffs Association have agreed to suspend the planned industrial action, after Network Rail tabled a new pay offer during their talks at Acas.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said: “Following the Acas talks, RMT has received a revised offer that enables us to suspend the planned industrial action while we consult in full with our Network Rail representatives.”

Manuel Cortes, general secretary of the TSSA, added: “Our negotiating team at Acas has received a revised offer from Network Rail.

“As a result of this, they have suspended the planned industrial action, pending the outcome of a meeting of our workplace representatives next week.”

Over the past few days, when it had appeared that the strike would be going ahead, rail passengers had been advised not to travel, because the strike was expected to caused widespread disruption to the network.
