Royal Mail running final trials for finger scanners in Swindon Mail Centre
Royal Mail staff at the Swindon Mail Centre are taking part in the final trials for new finger scanners. The finger-mounted scanners are being used to process correctly barcoded parcels and track mail. Once the final trials are concluded, Royal Mail expects that the scanners will be deployed across all mail centres and RDCs over the coming months.
According to a joint statement issued by Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union earlier this month: “The outputs from the Swindon Mail Centre trial will inform the discussion on the use of the data captured by the scanning process… [and] also help shape the training and coaching package that will be in place to support the function.”
The same statement added: “The first of the planned up to 21 Parcel Automation Machines will be installed in autumn 2015 at Swindon Mail Centre and it will then be subject to a full operational trial under the terms of the National Generic Trial Agreement.”
