Buyer found for food delivery specialist SpoonRocket?

SpoonRocket, the San Francisco-based food delivery company which announced on Tuesday (15 March) that it was closing down, may be set to make a come-back. Although SpoonRocket’s website currently still has a “Goodbye…” message dominating its home page at the time of writing (14:00 GMT on 17 March), the US technology news website TechCrunch has reported today that Brazil-based iFood is buying the company for an undisclosed sum.

“We are very happy to have found a home for our technology with iFood,” SpoonRocket co-founder Anson Tsui was quoted as saying by TechCrunch. “Even though SpoonRocket did not work out, I do believe we have one of the best food delivery systems in the world and it is amazing to see it live on through iFood.”

This is quite a recovery – given that another SpoonRocket co-founder Steven Hsiao had told TechCrunch just yesterday that a hoped-for deal had failed to materialize, and the website still notes that the team had “explored all strategic options till the very last minute but unfortunately, they all fell through”.

iFood, appears to be well-funding, having raised support from Just Eat and Movile, and is bidding to be a major player in the Latin American on-demand economy.
