French postal unions head call for post office debate
The French federation of rural mayors, the French farmers’ union Confederation Paysanne and the French housing federation are among the associations which have joined forces with French postal unions to demand a national debate on the future of the French post office (La Poste). These groups and others have all signed an open letter to the French prime minister, Jean-Pierre Raffarin, reminding him of La Poste’s public-service mission.
The signatories call for a debate not only on the fate of the post office, but also on that of France’s central bank, the Banque de France, the French deposit and consignment office, Caisse des Depots et Consignations, the national savings bank, Caisses d’Epargne, and the French land and real estate company Credit Foncier.
