Booming Metromail seals new contract
Direct mail specialist Metromail has taken on an extra 50 staff in the past six months and has just announced a new six-figure contract.
The Peterlee-based company now employs 270 people and aims to take on another 50 soon.
Its new contract has been secured with gardening supplies company Plantiflor, which will mean Metromail sending out an extra 10m mailing packs a year, on top of its current 175m total.
Managing director John Poland says he will be investing up to pounds 1.5m in the next 12 months.
There are also plans for the Saga-owned company to lease more property for expansion, and eventually to buy modern new premises in the Peterlee area .
Mr Poland said: “In a difficult economy we are able to attract business and satisfy our customers’ needs.
“People here have been brilliant, and we have been recognised as being one of the friendliest mailing houses in the country.”
Mr Poland says his next challenge is to assess the implications of Royal Mail’s monopoly coming to an end, with the government looking to introduce more competition.
He added: “Like everyone else in the industry, we are looking to see what happens to Royal Mail.
“We currently account for 41pc of the mail going out of its Newcastle base.
“When we first moved to our building here, the building seemed colossal.
“Two years later we are struggling for space and further expansion is becoming more urgent.”
