Unions fight UK Royal Mail train demise

Union leaders were taking their campaign to save mail trains to the heart of Government today by calling on the Prime Minister to intervene.

Officials from several unions, including Aslef, the Rail Maritime and Transport Union and the Communication Workers Union were delivering a letter to 10 Downing Street calling on Tony Blair to reverse the Royal Mail’s decision to stop transporting letters by rail.

MPs were also being lobbied by mail train workers from across the country, who were travelling to London to warn of job losses.

The Royal Mail plans to switch from rail to road under a plan to save millions of pounds, but has given an assurance that more efficient use of lorries and vans will lead to fewer road journeys.
