Australia Post 'most reliable service'
The nation’s postal service is the most reliable and one of the cheapest in the world, according to Australia Post’s annual report.
The report, tabled in federal parliament today, showed Australia Post’s on-time letter delivery reached an all time high of 96.5 per cent in the 2002/2003 financial year.
Australia Post chairman Linda Nicholls said the improvement in on-time letter delivery was the result of new processing systems and technology, with new parcel processing centres built in Melbourne and Sydney in the past year.
The report showed the organisation’s gross revenue was up 4.3 per cent to $3,971.9 million, with net profit after tax up 11.4 per cent to $330.8 million.
In the past financial year, Australia Post delivered 5.26 billion mail articles to 9.4 million delivery points and served an average 1.09 million retail customers each day.
Australia Post managing director Graeme John said despite January’s stamp price increase, Australia’s basic postage rate remained one of the lowest in the world.
Mr John said in the past year Australia Post had increased its range of products and services and expanded business banking services to 494 outlets, including 300 in rural areas.
