Sam’s Club offering free shipping to Plus members

US retailer Sam’s Club has announced its Plus members will now receive free shipping on most online items, with no minimum purchase requirement.

In a notice posted on its website today (14 February), Sam’s Club (part of the Walmart group) said that it is also reducing the number of membership types available to two levels: Club for $45 a year (formerly Sam’s Savings) and Plus for $100.

The company also reported that it expected to ship its first package from its recently-announced  eCommerce fulfilment centre in Memphis, Tennessee “early this Spring”.

Perhaps inevitably, US media have presented this move by Sam’s Club as an attempt to counter the always-loom threat of Amazon and its Prime proposition.
