Portuguese disruption minimal after strikes

Correios de Portugal has said that its service had been largely unaffected after a series of minor strikes over pay cuts. Yesterday, only ten postal workers across two locations (Alentejo and Pegões) participated in the industrial action – which was sanctioned by the SNTCT union.

The union says that changes to work timetables, prompted by outsourcing, could see the average postman lose EUR 270 a month in salary.

A spokesman for Correios said: “It is confirmed therefore that the population in general has not been affected so far by the strike and that the impact is marginal.”

However, the SNTCT has also ordered a general strike for today in response to a three-year wage freeze, and plans further action in May over the potential privatisation of the postal operator.
