DPD creates 50 new jobs with £3.5m Peterborough depot

Parcel delivery company DPD has invested £3.5m in a new 37,000 sq ft purpose built depot in Peterborough, which will create 50 new jobs when fully operational. The new facility, which is more than twice the size of DPD’s current Peterborough depot, will help manage a significant increase in parcel volumes locally, generated by DPD’s hugely successful one-hour timeslot service, Predict.

The state-of-the-art depot is located just off the Fletton Parkway at the new Gateway Peterborough distribution park. The facility will open in early April and replace DPD’s existing depot in central Peterborough, which is over 15 years old.

In addition to offering improved access to the A1 and routes around Peterborough, the new, bigger site also includes more parking, more office space and the very latest automated sorting technology which is capable of sorting 3,500 parcels an hour, significantly improving the efficiency of the operation.

Dwain McDonald, DPD’s CEO, commented; “Our new Peterborough depot is the latest stage of our ongoing investment in our network. We have significantly increased our capacity in recent years due to record new business growth and strong demand for our services from businesses and retailers. The expansion is set to continue as we are committed to having the most efficient and up to date network in the market so that our customers can really see the benefits of using DPD.”

“Peterborough reflects what is happening across the country at the moment. We have outgrown our old site and to improve efficiency we needed more loading bays, better access to the local road network and the latest sortation equipment. But we also get much more office space, more parking for our staff and on-site facilities such as a canteen and a van wash.”

“Gateway Peterborough is a fantastic development. Location and access are key issues for us and relocating to Gateway gives us all those benefits and the space to create a modern, purpose built parcel depot. We’ve worked closely with the developers Roxhill and we’re very proud to be the first company on the site. Our team will be working hard now to get everything ready for a smooth transition in the coming weeks.”
