Correos orders 1,371 vehicles as part of fleet modernisation plan
Spain’s Correos has invested more than EUR 5m in modernising its delivery fleet, ordering more than 1,300 new vehicles. The national postal operator in Spain said last week that it has purchased 1,000 Piaggio Liberty motorcycles, 220 Renault Kangoo vans, and 136 Citroen Jumpy trucks.
The Kangoo vehicles offer a 600kg payload, while the Jumpy trucks offer a payload of 1,200kg.
The new motorcycles are expected to begin operations in October and November, with the Kangoo vehicles arriving in November and early December, with the Citroen trucks arriving in November and December.
Correos is also planning on ordering 15 larger trucks that would offer 1,500kg payloads, but has not yet completed the procurement process. These are not included within the EUR 5,217,520 investment package. The contract for the trucks is expected to be awarded in September, for the vehicles to be supplied during December.
The state-owned firm said the investment was part of a company-wide programme designed to replace and expand the fleet where necessary, to strengthen service delivery.
Correos said it chose vehicles that it has purchased before, since it was able to use the existing experience of its delivery staff to demand additional benefits that will help improve daily mail delivery services.
“The new batch combines both safety and comfort, offering lower fuel consumption and emissions,” the company said. “This initiative comes alongside other efforts by the postal company to reduce the environmental impact of its activities as far as possible.”
Correos has a fleet of more than 13,000 vehicles, of which 9,000 are motorcycles. The fleet travels more than 25m kilometres each year as the fleet delivers about 3.6bn items across the country.
