Swiss Post announces cost cuts

Swiss Post is strengthening its financial position while cutting internal costs to secure its long-term financial sustainability.

The planned cost reduction measures affect employees in management and support functions and could result in a maximum of 110 redundancies. Where necessary, Swiss Post will conduct a consultation process. Services for customers and employees in operations are not affected.

Simpler processes and lower internal costs

To ensure that the public service remains reliable and affordable in the future, Swiss Post is consistently focusing on four key levers: proportionate pricing measures, internal efficiencies, targeted growth in its core business and modernization of the regulatory framework. Despite a strong position in logistics, communication, mobility and financial services, the future remains challenging and pressure to take action is still high. Customers are sending fewer and fewer letters and are increasingly paying online rather than at the counter. Growth in new business areas and pricing measures are not yet sufficient to offset declining revenues. With the measures now planned, Swiss Post is further reducing costs in its internal units. “We’re responsible for ensuring that Swiss Post remains relevant, high-performing and self-sustaining in the future. That’s why we want to reduce our own costs where they don’t have a direct impact on our customers, and, in turn, make our own contribution,” explains CEO Pascal Grieder.

Simpler processes and lower internal costs

By the end of 2027, Swiss Post is planning to reduce material and personnel expenses in its management and support functions. To this end, Swiss Post is simplifying processes and structures and dispensing with internal services that go beyond the required level. As a result, there could be a maximum of 110 redundancies in traditional office roles. Where necessary, Swiss Post will conduct a consultation process and involve the people affected. It wants to minimize the impact on employees through regular, early retirements and natural staff turnover.

Socially responsible implementation

Where jobs are lost, Swiss Post acts in a socially responsible manner, based on existing social partnership agreements and the redundancy plan. “Executive Management is aware that this plan is painful for the employees concerned. Swiss Post is handling the unavoidable job cuts in a prudent and socially responsible manner. We’re supporting those affected in a responsible way. At the same time, we need to position Swiss Post today to make sure that it remains successful and self-sustaining in the future,” explains Pascal Grieder. Services for customers and employees in operations, such as in delivery or in branches, are not affected by the measures.

Ensuring a strong public service in the long term

The planned measures are part of Swiss Post’s transformation. They will help Swiss Post to continue to provide a strong public service without taxpayers’ money and to invest in the future. At the same time, the modernization of the statutory universal service obligation is vitally important to Swiss Post. It therefore welcomes the Federal Council’s efforts to adapt the universal service dynamically to the actual needs of the population from around 2035. With the planned measures, Swiss Post is creating the conditions to remain relevant, high-performing and self-sustaining in the future. Find out more.
