Lithuanian Post Services liberalization

The five year development strategy for the state-owned postal service Lietuvos Pastas approved by the government envisages the liberalisation of the postal service sector and restructuring of the state-owned entity into a joint stock company. “The postal service market will be gradually liberalised leading to more intensive competition between the providers of mail services. The most important phases in the implementation of the new strategy will deal with the adoption of a postal law and restructuring of Lietuvos Pastas into a joint stock entity,” the government press service reported in its statement. The major purposes of the Lithuanian postal sector development for 2004-2008 are to ensure the liberalisation of the sector based on EU regulations, the accessibility of postal services, and the competitiveness of the market. The aforementioned strategy has been formulated with regard to the changes in the global postal service sector, as well as goals and tasks to be implemented in the next five years.
