Japanese Koizumi says he has candidates for postal privatisation

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said he plans to appoint a minister in charge of privatizing the nation’s postal service as soon as this summer and already has several candidates.

When asked if he would create a new post to handle the privatization, Koizumi said “yes, we should consider appointing a minister for the task.” He was speaking to reporters at his residence in Tokyo. When asked if he already had candidates for the post, he replied that he has “several.”

Koizumi has said he wants to privatize the nation’s postal service system by 2007. Koizumi will create a new ministerial post after upper house elections in July to oversee the sell off of the post office, Kyodo News reported earlier today, without citing where it obtained the information.
